Border-Crossing Queers: Writing and Researching Journeys of Resistance

A workshop with Prof. Churnjeet Mahn, University of Strathclyde Glasgow

Date: February 15, 2023 2pm – 4pm
Venue: Lectorial 1 (1.21) in RSSS

Who should attend: academics at all stages of their career, graduate students and anyone else using writing as a tool of resistance

What can we learn from looking at the history and experience of migration through a queer lens? How does this approach open up new routes to transperipheral solidarities across communities?

This workshop considers histories and stories of queer migration, travel and displacement.

Key questions we will address include:

  • Where are the histories and stories of queer travel, migration, and displacement? Who counts?
  • What ethical considerations do we need to consider when working with marginalised queer people on the subject of travel, migration, and forcible displacement?
  • How do we create counter archives of queer travel and resistance?

Spaces are capped so registrations are essential (free tickets). More information here

This event is part of the  Queer Displacements Conference - Canberra edition 15-16 February 2023

Forcibly Displaced People Network in partnership with Humanities Research Centre is presenting the Canberra edition of the Queer Displacements conference.

The Queer Displacements is the first and only conference in the Asia Pacific designed to comprehensibly foreground protection and settlement challenges of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) forcibly displaced people. It is created to campion the voices and the lived experience of LGBTIQ+ forcibly displaced people.

After the success of 2019, the Queer Displacements conference returns to Canberra. Join us for two Canberra events. See here for more information on Queer Displacements: Leadership, Partnership & Belonging – discussion panel and book launch. The main Queer Displacements conference is being held 22-23 February in the Western Sydney University. These events are funded by the ANU Gender Institute. We wish to thank ANU Gender Institute and Humanities Research Centre for their support of the Canberra events.
